The Hamilton Jr Bulldogs 04 Minor Bantam AAA held a
fundraiser to raise money for the Oncology department and clinic at McMaster
Children’s Hospital.
The event raised
over $6,000. The team raised the funds by selling yellow laces to other teams
that participated in their organizations hockey tournament during the first
weekend in December. They also sold Hockey Fights Cancer hats and t-shirts.
This event was
not only to raise money but also to raise awareness about childhood cancer. The
team wanted to ensure the money raised impacts the children and families
directly. They have decided to make a bag to be presented to each child
admitted to the ward that is diagnosed with cancer. This will be an ongoing
initiative as new kids are sadly diagnosed each week. Food, parking and travel
are the biggest expenses that families face during their time in hospital. The
first initial days when a child is diagnosed, a family is truly in a daze as
they become to learn about treatment and the road ahead. Each bag given to the children
will include gift cards, a toy and a card from the team.
On January 26th the boys will be visiting McMaster Children’s Hospital to present the first group of bags. They will also be supporting another event in February called Chase’s Gift that holds a fundraising event for the same cause.
