Former Hamilton Jr Bulldog and current Niagara IceDogs forward Carter Verhaeghe has been selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 3rd round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, 82nd overall!
Verhaeghe enjoyed a breakout sophomore season for the IceDogs, scoring 18 goals and 26 assists for 44 points in 67 games this past season, good enough for fourth in team scoring behind only the veteran first line of Ryan Strome, Brett Ritchie and Steven Shipley. The Waterdown native was also fantastic in the playoffs for the IceDogs, finishing second in playoff scoring for the IceDogs with two goals and two assists for four points in five games.
A 6'1", 181 lbs. centre, Verhaeghe saw his draft stock rise throughout the season. His selection 82nd overall continued a very quick climb that saw Verhaeghe jumped 20 spots in the NHL Central Scouting final draft rankings from 122nd at midterm to his final spot of 102nd before a jump of another 20 spots with his selection at 82nd in the draft itself. All this comes after the 17-year-old Verhaeghe was left off NHL Central Scouting's preliminary draft rankings.
The Hamilton Jr Bulldogs organization would like to congratulate Carter on his selection and wish him all the best with the Leafs!
